I saw an article the other day that mentioned a video of Billie Eilish had reached a billion views. So, I watched it of course. I had to see what garnered a billion views. I have no comment on the video. This isn't about the video. It's not actually about Billie Eilish. It's about what she represents.
I watched that video with a billion views. Not a million. A billion. Do you understand how much that is? It's a ridiculous amount of views. I never heard of the video or song that for an entire year, millions of people sought out.
Billie Eilish has 36 million YouTube subscribers. I don't know any of her songs. Never heard them on the radio, or had any pop into my rotation while listening through a Spotify or Pandora playlist. That billion viewed video was the first piece of content I've ever seen of hers. I don't even remember the song.
She is famous, to many, but not me.
Billie Eilish's music doesn't even register in my world. That's how powerful the internet has become. It's a tool that can build micro-worlds. There are many of these worlds. Ecosystems of cultures. Cultures within cultures. Subcultures of subcultures.
Success is no longer a system in which you fall in place. Where you abide by certain rules, guidelines, and steps. Where each door of opportunity has to be opened by someone and the individuals who possessed the key are few. Now those doors can be picked, kicked open, or bypassed altogether. You can create a micro-world. It doesn't need to be Billie Eilish millions big to be successful. Your world can be modest in size but still big in impact.
The internet has allowed us to expand the depths of our individualized worlds. It lets us seek out and find the smallest of interest or pleasures we desire to entertain. And for everything we wish to partake in - buying, watching, reading, listening - someone is supplying that product for us. If you want success the internet has created another avenue in which you may achieve it. Building your micro-world isn’t easy, but it’s doable.
There is no one recipe for success. But there used to be a cookbook to follow. Not anymore. The internet has provided a plethora of new ingredients to play with. You can make whatever meal you want. You just have to get cooking.
