Black love matters. Black lives matter. Can’t have one without the other. Black love matters because Black lives matter.

There is nothing like the strong, steady, firm, unending, indestructible nature of the love of a Black man. There is no comparison to the passionate, compassionate, unrelenting, multiplying, life-giving love of a Black woman. When the two come together, there is power. Perhaps this is why there have been such strong forces to try to put asunder.

The history of this country- the history of this world- is such that Black families have been strategically torn apart for centuries. Black people stolen from Africa and sold into the slave trade; Black captives forbidden from partaking in the sacred union of marriage under the tyranny of the slave system; Black fathers today, disproportionately, unjustly, habitually taken from their loved ones by the oppressive incarceration system.

The attack on Black lives, on Black love, has been by design. And still, we survive. How do we thrive?

As a people, as a country, as a world, as a race, we are still healing. As with any wound, true healing can only take place from the inside, out. Our healing is in each other. As we heal, we continue to glow, continue to grow. We are at our most magical when we do so, together.

Black love is being able to look into the eyes of your person and automatically understand their pain and their promise; appreciate the strength and the triumph of the blood within their veins; arms, language, laughter, ears that instinctively provide a soft, safe place; knowing, without having to explain; seeing yourself reflected in their face.

It is special. It is one of a kind. It is necessary. It is spiritual. Irreplaceable. Inimitable. Reverent. Divine. Revolutional. It is the breaking of generational curses. It is the beginning of generational blessings.

Many say color shouldn’t matter. This doesn’t change the fact that it does. There are Black matters that need addressing; restoring; and reparating. This work can only begin and end with love. Black love is.
